Instructor Jeff Mathews, a Morgan resident, has been a student, practitioner, and instructor of Itosu-ryu (traditional Shito-ryu style) karate since 1985. He is currently a Go-Dan (5th degree) black belt in the Itosu-ryu system.
As a student of Nihon Karate-do Itosu-ryu you will study a dynamic and powerful traditional martial art in the Shito-ryu style – a self-defense art proven effective over time since the 1800s. You will learn how to generate speed, strength, and power through correct breathing, coordination of movement, and concentration. Each student is able to progress at his or her own rate. A student’s rate of advancement depends on personal ability and level of commitment to training. An important step in the study of karate is testing for your next belt level.
Kihon: Basics or fundamentals, this is the foundational aspect of karate, which includes blocks, strikes, stances and footwork, all designed to teach and perfect a student’s training.
Kata: A pattern of martial arts movements practiced to memorize and perfect striking and blocking movements. Each kata contains several block and counter techniques with specific meaning and application.
Kumite: The practice of free sparring. Here the student develops fighting skills thru controlled sparring with other students in a safe setting.
